MFTA (Materials for the Arts) is excited to present a creative reuse art class surrounding the material... paper! A great activity to take place in honor of Earth Day (April 22). The class has both a historical perspective and a practical application of collage!

We will learn about collage and its applications through an art historical and hands-on investigation of influential collage artists Lois Lord, Kurt Schwitters, and Mikalane Thomas.

Participants will then create an artwork using reused and recycled paper based materials, inspired by art history, and participating in an open-ended material exploration.

These are the materials you'll need for the class: scissors and a glue stick or tape.

Gather up any paper materials you have in your home like recycled paper or cardboard, cereal or pizza boxes, cardboard, magazines, old mail. cards, photos, colored paper or any other paper materials around your house!

Materials for the Arts is New York City’s largest creative reuse center dedicated to supporting arts and cultural organizations. A program of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs with support from the Department of Education and Friends of Materials for the Arts, in 2018, MFTA collected 1.7 million pounds of reusable materials from businesses and individuals across the five boroughs. These items were made available, free of charge, to nonprofits with arts programming as well as New York City public schools and City agencies.
