Senior Citizens Day
WHAT IS NATIONAL SENIOR CITIZENS DAY?
A Day to Honor, Celebrate, and Appreciate Our Elders
Observed every year on August 21st, National Senior Citizens Day is a special occasion dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions, wisdom, and achievements of older adults in our communities.
WHY WE CELEBRATE
Recognizing Impact: Senior citizens have shaped our families, workplaces, and neighborhoods through decades of hard work, leadership, and resilience.
Honoring Experience: They hold a wealth of knowledge, history, and life lessons that guide and inspire younger generations.
Promoting Well-Being: It serves as an important reminder to support the health, independence, and dignity of older community members.
THE HISTORY
The holiday was officially established in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan, who declared:
"Throughout our history, older people have achieved much for our families, our communities, and our country. That is still true today... We owe them and ourselves our best efforts to ensure that our communities are good places for all."
