Up until August 2020, NYC only had five Public Art works representing historic women, but there is actually a huge number of sculptures that were created by female artists, starting with Emma Stebbins’ Angel of the Waters in Central Park. During the 19th C, it was mostly upper-class women who were able to receive artistic training and win public commissions, even for large equestrian sculpture, but female artists were also recruited for the World’s Fairs and increasingly succeeded to gain visibility in modern times, adding important figurative and abstract works to our urban fabric. Some of these artists include Anne Huntington, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Marisol, and Louise Nevelson.
