Like so many leading artists of his time, Marc Chagall came to New York City during WWII into exile, which allowed him to continue to work and exhibit, but also to create major public works like the monumental paintings for the Metropolitan Opera and the glass windows for the UN as well as the Rockefeller family. He was also invited to collaborate in major theater productions. While NYC is not featured prominently in his paintings, the experience of war and persecution, the loss of his wife Bella, and his newfound love are all woven into the fabric of his established poetic language and still resonate profoundly in our times.
