The Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama has become a cultural icon, one of the most successful living artists who mesmerizes international audiences with her magical immersive infinity spaces, pumpkin sculptures and colorful paintings. This year, 2021, the Bronx Botanic Garden is celebrating her with a comprehensive exhibition, but between 1958-1972 she was omnipresent in NY, an active member of the young artist generation that challenged society with nude performances, peace demonstrations and brandnew directions in art. While courageously battling mental illness, actually embracing it with all her might, she carved out her niche as an artist and continues to inspire millions!
