AARP to Hold Free Community Workshops at RSS this Fall

Workshops Will Be Covering Senior Advocacy, Job Searching in the Digital Age and Finances for Older Adults

New York, NY – August 19, 2019:  RSS-Riverdale Senior Services is sponsoring three free community workshops from AARP at the RSS Center.

On Wednesday, September 18, from 2:-3:00 PM, AARP will be presenting “Engaging Locally”.  AARP will talk about new ways for residents to get involved in their communities and have influence in local and national policy matters. Local advocacy includes actions to focus on the high cost of drugs and to promote accountability from pharmaceutical companies. AARP has been working with the New York State Senate to help New Yorkers to have access to affordable versions of their prescriptions.

The second workshop “Job Search in the Digital Age” will be offered on Wednesday, September 25 from 4-5:30 PM. It is intended for the older adult making career changes, whether by choice or necessity. The subject matter on the agenda includes job search engines and boosting digital presence, age-proof resumes, and advice for online networking through LinkedIn. Starting in October RSS will be offering a 10-week program from Senior Planet called WORK! This course will focus on writing resumes and cover letters using Google docs templates and how to use job search websites. The course also covers tips for writing professional emails, emailing attachments, uploading files, and how to ace a video interview.

The closing event in the AARP series “Living Longer, Living Smarter: Finances” will be offered on Wednesday, Oct 2 at 6-7:30 PM.  This workshop focuses on creating a plan and making sure to share it with those who need to know. Planning for the possibility of long-term care gives you time to learn about services in your community and what they cost. It also allows you to make important decisions while you are still able”.  This session focuses on the cost of long-term care, costs covered/not covered by government programs and private financing strategies. The program also will identify resources to help create long-term care plans.
