Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher turned reluctant astronaut, wakes up from a coma aboard a starship with severe amnesia and his two crewmates dead. As his memory gradually returns, he realizes humanity is facing an extinction-level crisis: an alien microorganism named Astrophage is eating the Sun's energy, threatening an apocalyptic global ice age within decades.

Sent on a one-way mission to Tau Ceti—the only nearby star unaffected by the organism—Grace must figure out how to stop it. Upon arrival, he encounters another lone survivor on the same mission: Rocky, an engineer from a spider-like, rock-skinned alien species whose home system is facing the same threat. Despite massive biological differences, the two forge a deep friendship and combine their knowledge of science, physics, and engineering to find a biological counter-organism (Taumoeba) that can save both of their worlds.
