The pioneering photographer Alice Austen lived on Staten Island for almost all of her life and her house is now a dedicated landmark as well as a LGBTQ Historic Site. She started using a camera as an ‘amateur’ at first, creating a collection of images documenting her middle class life, but as she perfected her technique, she also went into the City and to the quarantine islands of the time, creating some of the most innovative street photography. Collaborating with friends she also took photographs to illustrate a book on Bicycling for Ladies! The Great Depression significantly affected her life and career, but by now she is recognized as one of our greatest pioneers in photography!
