Tiffany & La Farge – The Revolutionary American Glass Windows
The new development of opaque glass panes revolutionized the decoration of churches and homes in the Gilded Age. Two artists, Tiffany and La Farge were the main competitors for commissions throughout the country. Their works express the new interests in travel and foreign cultures, new passions for nature, an interest for symbolism, the Pre Raphaelites and Art Nouveau, but especially for complex interior decoration. In particular the landscape image in glass was a great novelty. We will look at the artists' newly developed techniques as well as some of their most interesting work in New York as well as a bit beyond.
