Intergenerational Activities with Horace Mann adapt to the times to create garden art.

Horace Mann and RSS create beautiful art together

RSS and Horace Mann School students have been enjoying each other's company for years. Creating art projects, playing games, and having interesting conversations. Every week it was something new and interesting. On Service Learning Days, students and RSS members would work together on special projects for the center. An example, building the raised garden beds for the terrace garden at RSS.

So, how to continue doing intergenerational programs during a pandemic? Online, of course! This year Horace Mann invited RSS to join them for Service Learning Day via Zoom. The school's focus is on community service. They want the students to be aware of what is needed in the community, why it's important, and how they can give back. Horace Mann invited RSS to speak about the center's involvement with community gardens. We discussed the importance of these gardens and, how they help improve neighborhoods. Staff and RSS members participated in November.

A highlight of the day was doing an art project where students and RSS members both painted ceramic tiles (pictured here). The theme: gardens, and nature. The fun, painting them while everyone was online. Everyone enjoyed talking about the inspiration for their pieces and doing a little bit of showing off in the process. The tiles will be used to decorate the RSS Terrace Garden planters and a location on the Horace Mann campus.
