 ngsbridge Historical Society have teamed up for a community art project--t
 he creation of a tapestry representing our community\, events\, landmarks\
 , and local history on the 250th anniversary of American Independence. Par
 ticipants will work with teaching artist\, Tijay Mohammed\, to produce 'sq
 uares\,' which will all be stitched together to form the larger tapestry w
 hich will be displayed at different venues in the community.\n\nNo artisti
 c or sewing experience is needed! You can choose to create art\, design\, 
 or just help out with stitching--or you can do all of those components if 
 you wish.\n\nIn 1976\, local women from the Kingsbridge/Riverdale area got
  together for 'quilting bees' to produce the celebrated bicentennial quilt
 s. The quilts reveal what locals valued about our community half a century
  ago. Now it is your turn to express yourself.\n\nAbout your instructor\, 
 Tijay Mohammed\n\nAbout the Artist:\nGhanaian-born artist Tijay Mohammed h
 as showcased his work on both national and international stages\, gracing 
 prestigious venues like the Katonah Museum of Art NY\, the Hudson River Mu
 seum NY\, Materials for the Arts NY\, Art League\, Houston TX\, the Green 
 Drake Art Gallery in Pennsylvania\, Gallery 1202 CA\, Ravel d’ Art in Côte
  d’Ivoire\, and the National Museum of Ghana.\n\nTijay's impact extends be
 yond exhibition spaces\; he has spearheaded workshops and community-orient
 ed projects for esteemed organizations\, including the Studio Museum Harle
 m\, Brooklyn Museum\, Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling\,
  Children’s Museum of Manhattan\, Wallach Art Gallery\, Lehman College\, U
 niversity of Ghana\, and Pinto Community Centre in Trinidad and Tobago. \n
 \nThe artist currently resides in the Bronx\, NY\, and maintains a studio 
 in Ghana that serves as a sanctuary for visiting artists to interact with 
 residents\, promoting multicultural dialogue through story circles and art
  workshops.\n\n\nThe Kingsbridge Historical Society\n\nLocal historians fr
 om the Kingsbridge Historical Society will visit the class to provide supp
 ort and local history background and answer your questions. The Kingbridge
  Historical Society has been working to keep our local Riverdale/Kingsbrid
 ge history alive since 1949. This program is supported\, in part\, by publ
 ic funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partners
 hip with the City Council.\n\nIn 1976\, local women from the Kingsbridge/R
