h-sylvia-meo.html\n\nUp until August 2020\, NYC only had five Public Art w
orks representing historic women\, but there is actually a huge number of
sculptures that were created by female artists\, starting with Emma Stebbi
ns’ Angel of the Waters in Central Park. During the 19th C\, it was mostly
upper-class women who were able to receive artistic training and win publ
ic commissions\, even for large equestrian sculpture\, but female artists
were also recruited for the World’s Fairs and increasingly succeeded to ga
in visibility in modern times\, adding important figurative and abstract w
orks to our urban fabric. Some of these artists include Anne Huntington\,
Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney\, Marisol\, and Louise Nevelson.
